As a Mining Engineer, each day is different but typically begins with extensive reporting on the previous day’s shifts, planning and designing for the next phase of mining and preparing the weekly planning pack for the crews returning to work

Looking for the opportunity to fast-track your career and get real experience on the job? Recently appointed as a Mining Engineer at Thiess’ QCoal operations, Mitch Dawson’s career with Thiess shows what’s possible for students joining the Thiess Graduate Program.

During his Engineering studies at the University of Wollongong, Mitch took an interest in Mining Engineering and subsequently applied for a Vacation Student role with Thiess.  Following stints at both the Mt Arthur and Lake Vermont sites in 2018 and 2019, Mitch was successful in securing a role in the Graduate Program and has since been promoted to Mining Engineer at QCoal Northern Hub.

Mitch is grateful for the opportunity to work directly with operations at Thiess’ QCoal project and really contribute to the team.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is that I’m valued and I know I’m doing real work every day that helps us to deliver for our client,” Mitch explained.

“As a Mining Engineer, each day is different but typically begins with extensive reporting on the previous day’s shifts, planning and designing for the next phase of mining and preparing the weekly planning pack for the crews returning to work.

“We even use drone footage to enhance our planning and reporting processes.”

Mitch said the Thiess Graduate Program had provided him with great opportunities to experience all aspects of Mining Engineering and to continue his learning, has recently secured his drone license.

“I have also had great opportunities to participate in Thiess events such as the Rising Stars awards for Graduates and Trainees; the AUSIMM New Leaders Conference and other programs at Thiess head office and sites.

“All of these events allowed me to meet and network with senior leaders and start to enhance my own leadership skills.”

Mitch enthusiastically recommends the Thiess Graduate Program to current students.

“My advice to anyone interested in joining the mining industry is to apply for Vacation Work with Thiess – this will give you an opportunity to experience mining first-hand and often leads to grad opportunities,” Mitch said.

“This program and working with Thiess means you hit the ground running and really add value to the business.

“You also get to experience life in different locations and if you’re like me, live the very convenient and enjoyable camp lifestyle.

“I wanted a career that would allow me to live in different locations and create a great lifestyle – living in the camp and travelling around the Whitsundays on the weekends is hard to beat!”
