The Thiess story

At Thiess’ core is the pioneering spirit and passion for innovation of the legendary Thiess brothers, who redefined the mining and construction industry more than 85 years ago.

In the middle of Australia’s energy crisis in the 1940s, the Thiess brothers unlocked vital coal reserves in Queensland and New South Wales and became the first to deliver large-scale open-cut mining. Their leadership moved to the international stage in the 1960s when Thiess Peabody Mitsui founded Queensland’s export trade in high-quality coking coal to Japan. This continued as Thiess launched successfully into Asia in the 1980s, and Africa and the Americas in the 2010s.

The Thiess brothers’ legacy and can-do attitude remain at the heart of Thiess’ business. From plant and equipment innovations to new methodologies to technical advancements, Thiess’ rich history is a story of industry leadership.

Today, Thiess is built for international growth rising to the challenges and opportunities of the ever-changing mining industry – and raising the standard of what it means to be a mining services provider focused on client value.

Today, Thiess works with its clients to deliver mining excellence in Australia, Asia and the Americas. For more than 85 years, Thiess has operated in diverse commodities, geologies, environments and cultures.

The culture

Thiess is committed to a workplace where all employees feel valued and respected, where people can bring their best self to work because they feel safe, empowered, and valued team members. This respect for differences in people, thoughts, skills, experiences and backgrounds then drives excellence and innovation.

Their diversity and inclusion vision is everyone matters always. This is enacted through a global strategy that focuses on gender equality, first nation peoples, cultural diversity and an inclusive culture.

Thiess respects the history of Indigenous communities and the contributions their people make to society. They seek to develop authentic, long-term relationships with Indigenous people in the communities where they operate.

They also have an LGBTIQA+ network Allies which was formed to connect employees who identify as part of the LGBTIQA+ community and anyone who wants to support their colleagues. Now with more than 100 members in both Australia and Chile, Allies show their pride by wearing rainbow laces and polos and by speaking up against stereotypes and intolerance.

Social impact

Thiess is proud to work together with local communities where they operate. By working together with their clients, Thiess delivers social benefits through jobs and training for local people, supporting local business, community engagement and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders affairs.

Put simply, Thiess focuses on being a proactive, approachable and positive community member, not just a corporate partner. Every project works with community-led grassroots initiatives so that local benefits last beyond the life of a contract.

Thiess is also committed to respecting the environment. Across its operations, Thiess aims to manage water effectively, reduce waste and greenhouse emissions, minimise air and noise pollution and deliver industry-leading rehabilitation.

Career prospects

Thiess invests in their people to ensure you grow both personally and professionally.

If you show potential, you can expect to be encouraged to enrol in one of the company’s leadership programs. These programs cover key areas such as team management, change leadership, personal development and corporate social responsibility.

Even as an entry-level employee, you’ll be contributing to the company’s high-profile projects and working alongside colleagues who are some of the industry’s best talent. Thiess’ commitment if that you’ll have the flexibility and scope to stretch yourself, innovate, build new skills and advance your career.

The vibe of the pThiesslace

Mining isn’t for everyone as it usually requires spending long periods at remote locations (and working big days – or nights – while there). On the other hand, it can provide interesting, well-paid work and the opportunity to challenge your perspective.

There’s also a strong sense of camaraderie with your teammates that comes from working in challenging conditions.

Thiess is known for its strong safety culture, operating ethically and treating its employees with respect.

From the Employer:

Joining Thiess means you’ll get to work alongside a team of the best. Our team comprises industry leaders who contribute their skills, knowledge and experience each day to the benefit of our clients, project partners and the wider community.

At Thiess, we foster a work environment that creates more opportunities, encourages innovation, recognises and rewards excellence. We prioritise inclusion so our people can bring their best selves to work, feel safe, empowered, and valued members of our team.

Recruitment Process

Thiess offers a 12-week Vacation Program that includes working on-site to experience what it’s like being based in a remote location. The program is open to those studying mining, mechanical, electrical and mechatronics engineering, surveying, geology, data science, health & safety and finance.

While not guaranteed a place, those who do the vacation program can be fast-tracked into Thiess’ Graduate Program.

The Vacation Program is open to those working in the following disciplines:

  • Civil & Mining engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Mechatronics engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Surveying
  • Environment
  • Health & Safety
  • Digital & Technology

While not explicitly specified, presumably you’ll need a degree relevant to the field you wish to work in.

Those wanting to apply for a Vacation Program placement can complete an online application which includes online aptitude testing, video interview and then a formal panel interview. Given it is the mining industry, applicants should also be prepared for thorough vetting. This may include reference checks, qualification checks, right to work checks, background checks, fitness to work, as well as drug and alcohol testing.

Thiess also offers a two-year Graduate Program with structured on the job training, guided learning plans and mentoring. They do two 12-month rotations with placements across various teams and projects. Graduates are exposed to industry leaders, work in challenging, diverse and inclusive environments and can expect to experience significant technical, professional and personal growth.
