The Mayo Clinic story

The Mayo Clinic was formed by Dr. William Mayo mentored by the great John Dalton in England. Dr. Mayo immigrated to the United States in 1846 and moved to Minnesota in 1854.

In 1864 after a terrible tornado struck Rochester, Dr. Mayo, the Franciscan sisters, and his two sons catered to victims of the disaster. After performing impressively in caring for the sick, Mother Alfred Moes and the Franciscan sisters created the Saint Mary’s Hospital and made Dr. Mayo, their medical director.

After a while, the initial operators of the hospital took a step back and Sister Joseph Dempsey in collaboration with Dr. Mayo’s two sons ran the hospital for more than 30 years.

In the early 1900s, the Mayo brothers looked to add a second dynamic to their medical practice by hiring Dr. Henry Plummer. Dr. Henry focused on transforming the practice into a collaborative expanding one. Dr. Henry Plummer also facilitated the building of a dedicated multispecialty medical institute in 1914.

They also looked to expand their medical practice by educating students into capable graduates. All the proceeds from this venture were reinvested into educating physicians.

In 1986, the Mayo Clinic hospital and St. Mary’s hospital combined to form a mega health institute. They have continued to expand their footprints all over the United States and continue with their belief in putting patients above everything.
