  • Government & Public Service

We make government services simple so people can get on with their lives.

Every hour of every day in Australia, people in need turn to the Australian government for help. In those moments, our agency responds.

We rise to challenges fuelled by the knowledge that what we do matters. Our work can be challenging but is also rewarding, and suits people who are resilient and embrace innovation and change. We help customers at key moments in their lives. Whether helping customers, supporting strategic policy, leading whole-of-government initiatives, or excelling in various roles, everyone in the agency makes a real difference to Australians.

We’re an agency that helps people and we’re committed to progress, constantly moving forward to deliver services that are simple, helpful, respectful, and transparent.

About the program

When you join our graduate program, you’ll help us make government services simple. We’re looking for graduates who want to deliver a simple, helpful, respectful and transparent experience for our customers. We want graduates who are bold and forward-thinking and who can bring big ideas.

Our grads work in national and regional offices with plenty of support to help you meet your career and personal goals. Our dedicated team will help you along the way and we’ll team you up with a graduate buddy and senior executive staff mentor.

We’re looking for a range of people to join us. We want people with all kinds of backgrounds who’ve graduated from their degree within the last 5 years.

Our 10-month program offers 10 streams:

  • communication
  • data
  • digital
  • finance and accounting
  • generalist
  • human resources
  • legal
  • service delivery
  • service design
  • social work.

To apply for the generalist or service delivery stream you can have any degree.

To apply for most of the specialist streams, you must have an eligible degree specific to that area. You can also apply for the generalist or service delivery stream.

You can apply for more than one stream if you’re eligible.

Placement locations

We have positions available in major cities and regional towns. If you’re offered a spot in our program and need to move to a new location, we’ll help you relocate.

Development activities

We have a range of training and development to help you grow and shape your career. During our 10-month program, you’ll take part in a variety of activities including:

  • Australian Public Service Commission events
  • graduate and internal events
  • presentations to our CEO and some of our senior executive staff.

You’ll also get the following:

  • training specific to your work area.

These activities will help you:

  • broaden your understanding of the Australian Public Service (APS).

Service delivery experience

During your experience in service delivery, you’ll see how the work you do makes a positive difference to the lives of Australians.

Over 8 weeks, you’ll experience our service delivery environment first hand. This experience is unique to our graduate program and you’ll get insight into how Australians access government services.

Community OutReach Experience (CORE)

The Community OutReach Experience is a unique opportunity to take part in a life-changing experience where you have the opportunity to:

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Job security, opportunities to move into different roles, career progression pathways, opportunity to support people in the community, ability to work with a diverse range of people all over Australia, opportunities to travel to Canberra and participate in graduate activities.
  • It is knowing that you are making a difference in the community. Many of the people who work here are also lovely and helpful humans.
  • The best thing about working for Services Australia is the colleagues I work and collaborate with. As the proverb goes 'Your workplace is only as good as the people you work with,' which is very much true working at Services Australia. Everyone has been immensely supportive and helpful which has really made the workplace an enjoyable place to work.
  • Work-life balance, flexible work (flexible hours, flex, able to take leave)
  • The workplace is very accepting of you as a 'new' person to the organisation, they understand you don't know all the ins and outs of things, and they are quick to remind you "it's okay you're still learning". - very supportive.
  • Impact of larger systematic/political issues on day-to-day work (e.g. long processing times, long call waits), dealing with subsequent customer aggression, can be overly bureaucratic, processes sometimes conflict with the values of my profession, graduate pay starts at a fairly low rate.
  • I can't think of an aspect of working here that I would describe as the worst.
  • inconsistency in the graduate experience
  • Processes and systems sometimes
  • Not all teams are similar, some experiences can be awesome and some not.

I’m invited to a meeting with my Director and National Manager. They’re looking for information on the agency’s historic expenditure and extrapolating future expenditure while analysing trends and noting key findings. I note their requirements and we discuss timeframes.

I have been allocated a new task that requires a review of staff working patterns across numerous groups and divisions in the agency. I open my trusty spreadsheets and work on this throughout the day between meetings.
